Why crack welding is almost always cheaper than a new wheel

Big-rim premium cars take the worst of it. A 20-inch Range Rover Vogue alloy, a 19-inch BMW M Sport, a 21-inch Audi RS6 wheel. Main dealer replacements are eye-watering. A properly welded and refurbished wheel from our Slough workshop is a fraction of that and looks identical once the lacquer goes back on.

If it's pothole damage on the M4, the A4 through Colnbrook, or a kerb in a Windsor car park, the answer is almost always the same: bring it in, let our welders look at it, get a proper opinion before you spend on a replacement.

Forged supercar rims are worth saving too. A cracked Ferrari 488 forged wheel, a split Lamborghini Huracán rim or a Bentley Continental 22 with a hairline by the bead can usually be TIG welded back to spec rather than replaced at main dealer prices. Bring it in and we'll have a proper look before you commit to a new rim.

How we do it

  • Strip and inspect. Tyre off, wheel cleaned right back to bare alloy, crack mapped under a strong light.
  • TIG weld with the right filler. Different alloy grades need different rods. We don't guess.
  • Re-machine or re-profile. So the bead seat is true and the rim flange is right.
  • Pressure test. The wheel sits at pressure before we agree it's sound.
  • Refurb the face. Diamond cut, full colour change or factory finish, whatever yours had.
  • Balance and refit. Road Force balance so there's no steering wheel shudder afterwards.

What we won't weld

Some damage isn't safe to repair. A crack running clean across a spoke. A wheel that's been bent and re-bent more than once. Cracks with internal porosity right through the casting. If your alloy falls into that bracket, the team at Onyx Autocentre will tell you and recommend a replacement. We'd rather lose a job than send a customer out on a wheel we don't trust.

Drivers from Slough, Langley, Maidenhead and Gerrards Cross trust us with their cracked alloys every week. Five minutes from M4 J5, six from M25 J14.

Alloy Wheel Crack Welding. Frequently Asked Questions

Is my cracked alloy actually repairable?+
Most are. A hairline crack on the inner barrel or a chunk missing from the rim flange we can usually weld and re-machine. Cracks across the spoke, deep buckles or porosity right through the casting are a different story. WhatsApp a clear photo of the damage to 07393 580281 and our team will tell you straight.
Is a welded alloy safe to use on the road?+
Yes, when it's done properly. We TIG weld with the correct filler rod for the alloy grade, fully strip the area first, and pressure test before refitting. A properly repaired wheel will hold air and balance for the life of the car. A bodged weld will leak within weeks.
How long does crack welding take?+
Most single-wheel jobs are turned around the same day or overnight. Full set with refurb takes 2 to 3 working days. We'll quote you a firm time when you drop the wheel off in Slough.
How much does it cost?+
Far less than a new wheel, especially on Range Rover, BMW M Sport, Audi RS or Mercedes AMG sizes where genuine alloys run into the high hundreds. WhatsApp the photo to 07393 580281 or call 01753 439115 and the team will quote within the hour. Payment Assist available: first instalment at booking, then up to 5 more monthly payments, 6 in total, interest-free, on jobs up to £3,000.
Do you do it in-house or send it out?+
In-house. Cracks are welded, refurbished and balanced in our Slough workshop. No middleman, no postage, no excuses.
Will it pass MOT?+
A properly welded and pressure-tested alloy passes MOT no problem. A leaking or visibly damaged wheel is a fail item. We'll make sure yours is right before it leaves us.
What's the difference between welding and a refurb?+
A refurb is cosmetic. Paint, lacquer, possibly diamond cut. Welding is structural. Fixing the metal itself. Most crack jobs need both: weld the damage, then refurb the surface so it looks factory again.
Do you cover my area?+
We're in Slough SL3 7EW and weld cracked alloys for drivers from Langley, Colnbrook, Datchet, Windsor, Maidenhead, Uxbridge, Gerrards Cross and the Heathrow area every week.
