What is a wet belt?

A wet belt is a timing belt that runs inside the engine, in the oil. Not outside in the open like a traditional cambelt. Ford and PSA went with this design because it's quieter and lower friction. The trade-off is that the rubber sits in hot oil for its whole life.

Why it's a known weak point

Over time the belt degrades and sheds tiny rubber particles into the engine oil. Those particles get sucked into the oil pump pickup strainer and block it. Once the pump can't pull oil, pressure drops, bearings let go and the engine destroys itself. We've seen perfectly healthy-sounding cars come in with a blocked pickup and a scrap engine inside a week.

Manufacturers don't always make the interval obvious. Plenty of owners don't even realise their car has a wet belt, never mind when it needs doing. Service schedules have been revised down more than once on PureTech engines.

What we do. And what we don't

We replace the wet belt with a genuine like-for-like kit at the correct interval for your exact engine. Belt, tensioner, guides, oil pump pickup checked, engine oil and filter renewed with the manufacturer-specified grade. The job is done properly, once, the way the manufacturer intended.

We do not convert wet belt engines to chain or dry belt. Anyone offering that on a 1.0 EcoBoost or 1.2 PureTech is either misleading you or rebuilding the engine. The correct fix is a fresh wet belt kit, fitted before the old one fails.

Why getting it done on time matters

Replacing the belt costs a fraction of replacing the engine. Once the pickup is blocked the bill jumps from hundreds to thousands. And at that point you're looking at a used engine, not a repair. If your car is on the list below, don't wait.

Common wet belt engines we replace

Ford 1.0 EcoBoost (wet belt)

  • Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost
  • Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost
  • Ford Puma 1.0 EcoBoost
  • Ford B-Max 1.0 EcoBoost
  • Ford EcoSport 1.0 EcoBoost
  • Ford Ka+ 1.0 EcoBoost

Interval: Typically recommended around 60,000–100,000 miles depending on year and use. Call us with your reg to confirm.

PSA / Stellantis 1.2 PureTech (wet belt)

  • Peugeot 208, 308, 2008, 3008, 5008 (1.2 PureTech)
  • Citroen C3, C4, C4 Cactus, C5 Aircross (1.2 PureTech)
  • Vauxhall Corsa, Astra, Crossland, Grandland (1.2 Turbo PureTech-based)
  • DS3, DS4, DS7 (1.2 PureTech)
  • Toyota Yaris and Proace City (1.2 PureTech in some markets)

Interval: Manufacturer intervals have been revised. Call us with your reg and year. We'll confirm the correct interval for your car.

Other shared / known wet belt engines

  • Suzuki 1.0 Boosterjet and 1.4 Boosterjet (shared with some Toyota models)
  • Toyota Yaris / Yaris Cross 1.0 and 1.5 (where Toyota uses the shared PureTech-derived unit)

Interval: Intervals vary by model and year. WhatsApp your reg and we'll confirm.

We replace wet belts every week for drivers from Slough, Langley, Windsor and Maidenhead. Five minutes from M4 J5, six from M25 J14, short walk from Langley station on the Elizabeth Line.

Not sure if your car has a wet belt? It probably does if it's a Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, Peugeot/Citroen/Vauxhall/DS 1.2 PureTech, or one of the shared Toyota/Suzuki units. Send your reg on WhatsApp now and we'll check, quote, and book you in. Usually the same day.

Don't risk it. Call 01753 439115 or WhatsApp the Onyx team on 07393 580281 today. A belt costs a fraction of an engine.

Got a Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda or other engine with an external belt? You probably want our timing belt replacement page instead. That's a different belt and a different job.

Wet Belt Replacement. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a wet belt and how is it different from a normal timing belt?+
A wet belt is a toothed timing belt that runs inside the engine, submerged in engine oil. Instead of outside the block like a traditional dry timing belt or cambelt. It's used to drive the camshaft and often the oil pump. Manufacturers chose it because it's quieter and lower friction, but the rubber sits in hot oil for its entire life and degrades from the inside out.
Which cars have a wet belt?+
The most common are Ford 1.0 EcoBoost (Fiesta, Focus, Puma, B-Max, EcoSport, Ka+) and the PSA/Stellantis 1.2 PureTech (Peugeot 208, 308, 2008, 3008, 5008; Citroen C3, C4, C4 Cactus, C5 Aircross; Vauxhall Corsa, Astra, Crossland, Grandland; DS3, DS4, DS7). Some Toyota and Suzuki models share these engines too. If you're not sure, send us your reg on WhatsApp and we'll check in minutes.
How do I know if my car has a wet belt?+
Most owners don't. It's not advertised on the dash. WhatsApp your registration to 07393 580281 and our technicians will tell you for sure, plus the recommended interval for your exact year and engine.
What happens if a wet belt fails?+
The belt sheds tiny rubber particles into the oil. Those particles get sucked into the oil pump pickup, block it, and the engine loses oil pressure. End result: bearing failure, scored bores, a seized engine and a bill running into thousands. A wet belt failure on these engines often means a full replacement engine.
How much does wet belt replacement cost at Onyx?+
Far less than a new engine. Exact price depends on the car. WhatsApp your reg to 07393 580281 or call 01753 439115 and we'll quote within the hour. Payment Assist lets you pay the first instalment at booking, then spread the rest over up to 5 more monthly payments, 6 in total, interest-free, on jobs up to £3,000.
How often should a wet belt be replaced?+
As a guide, Ford EcoBoost wet belts are typically recommended around 60,000–100,000 miles or 6–10 years depending on year. PSA PureTech intervals have been revised down by the manufacturer more than once. Don't trust an old service schedule. Call us with your reg and we'll confirm the correct interval for your exact model and year.
Can I just wait until it fails?+
No. By the time you hear a noise or see a warning light, the oil pickup is usually already blocked and the engine is damaged. Wet belts are a 'replace before it fails' job, not a 'wait and see' job.
Do you convert wet belt engines to chain or dry belt?+
No. We do not offer conversions. We replace the wet belt with a genuine like-for-like wet belt kit. The right part, the right procedure, oil and filter renewed with the correct specification. That's the proper, manufacturer-approved fix.
Is wet belt replacement covered by Payment Assist?+
Yes, on jobs up to £3,000. Pay the first instalment when you book, then spread the rest over up to 5 more monthly payments, 6 in total, interest-free. Soft credit check, decision in minutes. Spreads the cost so there's no reason to put the job off.
How long does the job take?+
Most wet belt replacements are a one-day job at our Slough workshop. Drop the car in the morning, collect at the end of the day. We'll send you a WhatsApp when it's ready.
Do you cover my area?+
We're in Slough SL3 7EW and look after wet belt jobs for cars from Langley, Colnbrook, Windsor, Maidenhead, Uxbridge, Gerrards Cross, Staines and across the Heathrow area every week.
Will it affect my manufacturer warranty?+
No. Block Exemption rules mean any independent garage using OE-quality parts and the correct procedure can stamp your book without affecting the manufacturer warranty.
