Haldex Servicing for 4WD and AWD Cars in Slough
The Haldex coupling is the clutch pack that sends drive to the rear wheels on most transverse VW Group 4WD cars. It runs in its own little oil bath with its own filter, and the manufacturer wants the oil and the filter changed every 20,000 miles or three years. Almost no main dealer mentions it at service time. We do, every day, at our Slough workshop, because we have seen what happens when it gets skipped for 80,000 miles.
Old oil turns the friction plates lazy, the filter clogs, the pump struggles, and one day the car is effectively front-wheel-drive in the wet without anyone telling you. Worst case the pump fails and the whole unit needs replacing, which is a four-figure bill. A proper Haldex service is a fraction of that and Berkshire owners book it with us routinely.

What a Haldex service at Onyx in Slough includes
- Drain old Haldex oil. warm, fully, into a clean catch can so we can see what came out. Black or sludgy means it has been left far too long
- Renew the Haldex filter. Gen 4 has an internal filter that should be changed, Gen 5 has the cartridge that bolts to the pump housing. Both done properly
- Genuine VAG Haldex oil refilled. G 060 175 A2 for Gen 4 and 5 alike, to the correct level. Aftermarket oils that look the same do not perform the same
- Test drive and confirm engagement. we throttle the rear axle from a standstill on a damp surface to confirm the clutch is biting again, every car, every time
- Honest report on bigger work needed. if the pump is failing we will tell you straight, with photos, before you spend on a service that will not fix the actual problem
Symptoms of a knackered Haldex you can feel
Wheelspin from the front in the wet pulling out of junctions on a 4WD car is the obvious one. Less obvious: a clunk on full lock at low speed in tight car parks, an ABS or 4MOTION warning that comes and goes, or a car that has lost its planted feeling on damp roundabouts. Any of these and you are due a Haldex service in Berkshire before the bill gets worse.
