Powder Coating for Alloy Wheels in Slough. Tough Finish
Powder coating is a different process from standard wet paint refurb. The wheel is stripped back to bare alloy, primed, the powder is electrostatically applied, then the whole wheel goes into a curing oven at around 200 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. The result is a finish far tougher than spray paint, more resistant to chips, brake dust, salt, fuel and harsh wheel cleaners. What the Onyx powder coating process in Slough involves
- Tyres off and full chemical strip. old paint and lacquer removed cleanly back to bare alloy. We do not powder coat on top of cracked or peeling old paint
- Shot blast prep. the surface profile that lets the powder grip mechanically. The step almost nobody else does properly
- Etch primer applied. stops the alloy oxidising under the powder layer in years to come
- Powder applied and oven baked. electrostatically charged spray, then 15 to 20 minutes at around 200 degrees. Fully cured, not air-dried
- Clear powder top coat on metallics. for any finish that needs depth and chip protection. Optional but recommended on premium colours
- Tyres refitted and rebalanced. Road Force balance after, with valves renewed. Wheels go back on ready to drive
Finishes and colours we coat most often
Gloss black, satin black and matt black for the classics. Anthracite, gunmetal and graphite for the premium German look. Bronze and matt bronze for Honda Type R, Civic FK8 and FL5, Toyota GR Yaris and BBS-style fitments. Hyper silver, ice silver and OE-style silvers for stock-look refurbs. Bright colours and unusual finishes (forest green, sand, copper, candy reds) on request, with sample sprays first. Powder coating vs standard wet spray refurb
Wet spray refurb is fine for owners who want a refresh and accept they may need to do it again in a couple of years. Powder coating is the choice for owners who want the wheels to look the same in five years as they do this week. The trade-off is time (powder takes longer in process) and price (small premium per wheel). For commuter cars doing 20,000+ miles a year through Slough and Heathrow, it pays back fast.
