How we change a clutch

The job is mostly about doing it once, properly. Gearbox out (subframe down on most transverse VAG, full prop out on rear-drive BMW), old clutch and DMF inspected to confirm the diagnosis matches what's actually worn, new flywheel checked for run-out, friction face cleaned of any oil residue (clutches don't like oil), clutch centred with the alignment tool (not eyeballed), bellhousing torqued in sequence to spec, fluid bled properly with the right tool on cars with concentric slave cylinders. Then a real road test: pulling away, slow crawl, full throttle in third up the slip road, bedding the new clutch in properly before you collect.

A typical month brings in TDI Golfs and Caddys from Maidenhead and Hayes (DMFs that have spent their life at 1200 rpm in traffic), Transit Customs from the Slough and Colnbrook trades, 1 Series and 3 Series BMWs that have lived too many years in heavy commuter traffic, plus the odd performance car.
