A lot of the time, the rest of the exhaust is sound and the failure is a single seam, a rotted patch the size of a 50p, a joint between two sections or a hole around a flexi pipe. - Holes around lambda or NOx sensor bosses. a known failure point as the boss corrodes. New boss welded in, sensor refit
- Cat box outer skin perforation. where the outer can is rotted but the substrate inside is sound. We can patch the outer skin without scrapping a working cat
When weld repair is the right call (and when it is not)
Repair is the right call when the rest of the system is in solid condition and the failure is localised. You see it on cars 5 to 10 years old where the middle has gone but the back box and cat are fine, or on cars where the joint between the cat-back and mid pipe has corroded around the clamp.
Repair is the wrong call when the entire exhaust is rotted, when patches keep blowing in different places within months, or when you are looking at the third weld in two years. At that point a new mid-section assembly costs less than the labour we keep spending on patches. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your exhaust is on before quoting.
