Direct-injection petrol engines suffer a problem indirect-injection engines never did. Because the fuel is sprayed straight into the cylinder, it never washes over the back of the intake valves, and oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation system bakes onto the valves over time as a hard carbon crust. By 60,000 miles many of them are clogged enough to cost noticeable power, fuel economy and idle quality. Walnut blasting is the proper fix and we do it weekly at our Slough workshop on the engines that need it most.

This page is specifically for direct-injection petrol carbon clean. Generic decoke and chemical carbon clean treatments are on our main carbon cleaning page. Those have a place. They do not clean the back of intake valves. Only physical media blasting through a removed intake manifold does that, and it is what the engines below actually need.

Engines we walnut blast most weeks in Berkshire

  • BMW N54 (335i, 535i, Z4 35i, 1M). the original twin-turbo BMW DI six. Intake valves are caked by 50,000 miles. Power and economy both come back strongly after a proper clean
  • BMW N55 (335i, 435i, M2 N55, M135i). single turbo replacement, same intake valve problem
  • BMW S55 (M2 Competition, M3 F80, M4 F82). S55 carbon is real, especially on early cars now in higher mileage. Worth doing alongside spark plugs
  • VAG EA888 2.0 TFSI (Golf GTI, S3 8V, A3, Q3, Octavia vRS). the daily-driven workhorse DI engine. Almost every one we see at 80,000 miles needs walnut blasting
  • Mercedes M276 (E350, S350) and M278 (E500, S500). less talked about but just as guilty. Intake valves visibly carbon-coated by 70,000 miles
  • Audi 2.5 TFSI (RS3 8V, TTRS). the famous five cylinder, walnut blast highly recommended at higher mileage especially on mapped cars

What a proper walnut blast at Onyx Slough involves

  • Intake manifold removed. the only way to access the back of the intake valves. No magic chemical does this from the fuel rail
  • Each cylinder rotated to TDC closed. so the valves are seated and the chamber is sealed from the media
  • Crushed walnut shell blasted through dedicated tool. with simultaneous extraction so no media ends up in the engine. The right tool, not a workaround
  • Inlet ports inspected before and after. every cylinder, with photos on WhatsApp before reassembly so you see what came off
  • New gaskets and intake bolts as required. where the manufacturer specifies stretch bolts or single-use gaskets, we use new. No reuse to save a few pounds
  • Adaption reset and road test. ECU long-term fuel trims, idle and load adaption reset, then a road test through Langley to confirm idle and pull have returned

Symptoms that point to an intake valve carbon problem

Rough idle, especially cold. Hesitation under part throttle. Fuel economy down from where it used to sit. Misfire codes that come and go and never trace to one cylinder cleanly. Loss of throttle response that a Stage 1 remap fails to bring back. If you are driving an N54, N55, EA888 or 2.5 TFSI past 60,000 miles and any of those sound familiar, a walnut blast at our Berkshire workshop is very likely the fix.

Will chemical treatments do the same job?+
No. Bottle treatments through the fuel rail do not reach the back of the intake valves on a direct-injection engine, because the fuel never goes past them. Only physical media blasting works.

Usually yes, where carbon was the cause. We can confirm before and after on our dyno if you want hard numbers.
Is it worth doing before a remap?+
On a high-mileage DI engine, absolutely. A remapped engine with clogged intake valves is fighting itself. Do the clean first, then map.
