Range Rover Cracked Rim? Large-Diameter TIG Welding in Slough
Big wheels look great and ride badly. That is the trade-off, and around Slough it is one we see the consequences of every single week. A 22 inch Range Rover Autobiography wheel on a 35-profile tyre has almost no sidewall to absorb a sharp-edged pothole. The rim takes the impact instead, and what starts as a 'slow puncture nobody can find' is almost always a hairline crack on the inside of the barrel. Berkshire potholes have paid for a lot of new Range Rover wheels. They do not have to.
Our Slough workshop welds large diameter alloys most days. Most of these come back through large diameter refurb afterwards so the finish matches the other three, and if the tyre's sidewall is gone from the same hit we fit a new tyre while it's off.
Why large diameter wheels crack and small ones do not
A standard 18 inch wheel with a 55-profile tyre has roughly 100mm of rubber sidewall to compress when you hit a sharp edge. A 22 inch wheel with a 35-profile tyre has roughly 75mm, and the tyre stiffness is much higher, so it transmits more force through to the rim. Hit the same Slough pothole on both setups and the 22 inch wheel sees three to four times the energy at the rim flange. That is why your neighbour's Fiesta survives the same pothole that cracks your Range Rover.
It is also why we see the same wheels come back to us every winter. Customers from Windsor and Maidenhead on 22 and 23 inch Range Rovers are on first-name terms with us by their third repair. We do not love that for the customer, but we are very good at fixing it.

What proper large diameter weld repair looks like
Tyre comes off. The wheel is stripped, washed and dye-tested under bright light so we can see every micro-crack, not just the obvious one. The crack is V-ground out to bright aluminium on both faces where access allows, including a stop-drill at each end of the crack to prevent it propagating further during welding. The wheel is preheated to take stress out of the joint, then TIG welded with the correct grade of 4043 or 5356 filler for the alloy.
It is cooled slowly under a heat blanket to stop new cracks forming as it contracts. Once down to room temperature, the weld is dressed back flush, the wheel goes in the pressure tank, and only then does it move to refurbishment for refinishing. Diamond cut wheels get the full lathe-and-lacquer process. Painted wheels get colour-matched and re-lacquered. Either way, when it goes back on the car you cannot see where the damage was.
