Big Range Rover Alloys Need a Specialist. Here's Why
Large diameter wheels are everywhere in Slough and Berkshire these days. Range Rover Vogue and Sport on 22s, Velar on 21s and 22s, Audi Q7 and Q8 on 22 inch rotors, Mercedes GLE and GLS on 21s, Bentley Bentayga on 22s. They look fantastic and they cost serious money to replace, often a thousand pounds plus per wheel from main dealer. A proper refurb is a fraction of that and the wheel comes back as good as new if it is done right.
Not every wheel shop can handle this size. Standard refurb lathes max out at 20 inches. Ours takes wheels up to 24 inches diameter and we have done plenty. We strip, repair, refinish and refit in-house, including diamond cut, painted and powder coat finishes. We also have a wheel straightening jig rated for large diameter rims, which matters because hitting a pothole on the M4 in a 22 inch wheel is a different conversation to a 17 inch one. Heavy hits that crack the rim go through crack welding first.

Why large diameter wheels suffer more
Big wheels mean thin tyre sidewalls, often 35 profile or lower. Thin sidewall means the rim takes the hit, not the rubber. Slough and the surrounding Berkshire road network has its share of potholes, especially after winter, and the route in and out of Heathrow is no kinder. We see buckled 22 inch rims most weeks. The other issue is weight. A 22 inch alloy weighs significantly more than a 19 inch and that load goes through the lacquer and the bearings, so kerb damage spreads faster.
Buckled large diameter wheel? Read this first
- Vibration through the steering. above 50mph normally means a buckled rim, not just a balance issue.
- Slow puncture that keeps coming back. usually a tyre bead leak from a flat spot on the rim.
- We straighten on a hydraulic jig. rated for 24 inch rims. Most large diameter buckles are recoverable without replacement.
- Cracks are TIG welded. in-house, then pressure tested, then refinished.
- Honest assessment. if the wheel is beyond saving we will tell you and source a replacement OE rim.
What it costs vs main dealer replacement
Land Rover dealer pricing for a single 22 inch Range Rover alloy is normally in the hundreds depending on style, before fitting and TPMS. A full refurb from us, including straightening if needed and diamond cut where applicable, is a fraction of that, and the wheel comes back to OE finish. For four wheels the saving against replacement is significant. We will quote up front on photos and reg and there are no extras unless we find a crack you did not know about.
