Cracked a Tesla Alloy? Here's How We Fix It in Slough
Tesla wheel replacement costs are brutal. A genuine 21 inch Arachnid for a Model S is over a fair amount a corner once you include the centre cap and TPMS. A 20 inch Induction for the Model Y is not far behind. Hit a Slough pothole, crack the inside rim, and Tesla service centres will quote you a new wheel as a matter of course. They will not weld it. We will, and we do, every week at our SL3 7EW workshop.
Tesla wheels are aluminium alloy just like every other car. The metallurgy is no different. The crack repairs the same way, the pressure test confirms the same result, and the refinish puts the factory look back. The only thing different about a Tesla wheel job is the bill at the end, and ours is a fraction of Tesla's. After welding we run the wheel through full Tesla alloy refurb - Induction and Überturbine faces are diamond-cut, so it goes on the lathe.

Why Tesla wheels crack so often around Slough
Tesla wheels are designed for aerodynamic efficiency and range, not pothole survival. The Model S Arachnid, Model 3 Uberturbine and Model Y Induction all run very thin spoke sections and minimal rim flange thickness to reduce weight and drag. That is great for the range figure on the screen and bad for the rim when you hit a sharp pothole on the A4 at 50mph.
Add the weight of a Tesla, around 2.1 tonnes for a Model S Plaid, and the energy going into the rim flange on a sharp pothole strike is significant. The repair process for a Tesla wheel
Wheel off, tyre off, TPMS sensor safely removed. Wheel washed and dye tested to map every crack, not just the obvious one. The crack is V-ground out to clean aluminium with stop-drills at each end. The wheel is preheated, TIG welded with the correct filler for the alloy spec, then cooled slowly under a heat blanket so contraction stresses do not open a new crack.
Pressure test in a water tank to confirm it holds air. Refinish to match the factory spec, whether that is satin black, gloss black, silver or two-tone diamond cut. TPMS sensor refitted with a new service kit, tyre refitted, balanced, and back on the car. Most Tesla customers in Slough have their car back inside 48 hours. The repair is invisible.
