Aircon Leak? UV Dye Test Finds It Fast in Slough
An air conditioning system is sealed. It should hold its refrigerant for years, not lose it every summer. If your car needs a re-gas in May and is blowing warm by August, you have a leak. Another bottle of gas is not the answer. Honest leak detection is, and we do it properly at our Slough workshop every week.
We use three methods together: a 30-minute vacuum hold test that tells us how fast the system is losing pressure, an electronic refrigerant sniffer that pinpoints leaks at fittings and condensers, and UV dye that shows you exactly where the gas is escaping the next time you bring the car back. Common air conditioning leak points we find weekly
- Condenser at the front of the car. stone-chipped over time, especially common on Ford, Vauxhall and Audi. Most expensive single repair, but unavoidable once it leaks

How our leak detection process works
Step one, vacuum hold. We pull the system into deep vacuum and watch it for 10 to 30 minutes. The rate of pressure rise tells us roughly how bad the leak is. A system that loses vacuum in 30 seconds has a major leak. A system that holds for 30 minutes is sealed and probably just needs a re-gas.
Step two, sniff. If vacuum suggests a leak, we charge the system with a trace amount of refrigerant plus nitrogen and run an electronic sniffer around every joint, the condenser face and the compressor. Step three, UV dye. We inject fluorescent dye into the system, send you on your way, and ask you to bring it back in two weeks. The dye glows under UV light at the exact leak point. Three methods, one honest answer.
Why we will not just keep re-gassing your car
Selling you a re-gas every summer when we know the system has a leak is the kind of thing that gives independent garages a bad name. Every kilo of refrigerant we vent into a leaking system is also illegal under F-Gas regulations. We are an F-Gas registered workshop in Slough and we take that seriously.
