Diesel engines lose power slowly. A 200 BHP Audi 3.0 TDI that quietly slides to 160 BHP over five years does not feel obviously broken, just a bit lazy. The way to confirm what is really there is a measured dyno power run at our Slough workshop. We do diesel power runs every week for Berkshire drivers chasing lost performance, suspected EGR or DPF problems, or just an honest pre-purchase check before buying a used diesel.

Why a diesel might be down on power
- DPF partially blocked. high back-pressure throttles the turbo. Common on short-trip Slough school-run cars

What the diesel dyno run shows us
We strap the car down (2WD or 4WD as appropriate), warm it gently, do a measured pull through the gears. The screen plots BHP and torque against RPM in real time. We watch for a torque curve that rolls off early (turbo or fuelling issue), a soft top-end (DPF or restrictive exhaust) or a peak that is well below factory (multiple causes).
Diesel dyno runs at our Berkshire workshop are also great for proving a problem has been fixed. If you have just had a turbo, injector or DPF job done, a measured pull confirms the work has actually restored the numbers, with a printed graph to keep.
Combine with MPG and smoke check
Power and economy on a diesel are linked. A diesel making low BHP often returns poor MPG too, because the ECU is fuelling generously to hide the airflow or boost shortfall. We can run a controlled fuel-consumption check on the dyno against a steady load and compare it to factory expectations.
We also assess opacity-style smoke output during the run (visual and instrumented where the equipment is appropriate). Excess soot points strongly to MAF, EGR, fuelling or turbo issues. Honest interpretation of all three (power, MPG, smoke) gives you a clear next step before any money goes on parts.
