A Stage 1 ECU remap is the single biggest performance upgrade you can do to a modern turbocharged car without bolting on new parts, and we write them properly at our Slough workshop every week. No off-the-shelf generic file. No flash-and-pray. The car goes on our 4WD dyno, a base run logs current power, the map is loaded, then a verification run confirms what you've actually got. Berkshire drivers don't pay for guesswork.
Stage 1 means stock hardware. No exhaust, no intake, no intercooler upgrades needed. Standard turbo, standard injectors, standard everything. The gains come from optimising boost, fuelling, ignition timing and throttle response in the ECU map. Done sensibly, your car drives like a much faster version of itself with no impact on day-to-day reliability.
What we actually change in a Stage 1 map
- Boost pressure. lifted to manufacturer ceiling, not above it. We don't melt turbos.
- Fuelling. AFRs richened slightly under load so the engine isn't running on the edge of detonation.
- Ignition timing. advanced where the engine can take it, retarded where it can't. Per-cylinder where the ECU allows.
- Throttle map. linearised so the car responds to pedal input properly. Most stock maps are deliberately lazy.
- Soft rev limiter. raised modestly where it makes sense (mainly petrol turbos). Not on every car.
- Speed limiter. removed on request only. Track or private land use.
Typical Stage 1 gains on cars we map most weeks in Slough
- Audi A4 B8 / B9 2.0 TDI 143-190bhp. to 200-220bhp and 400-450Nm. Genuinely transforms motorway pulling.
- Golf GTI MK7 / MK7.5 (EA888 Gen3). 245-260bhp stock to around 305-320bhp and 420Nm+. The classic Stage 1.
- BMW 335d (N57) and 535d. 313bhp to roughly 370-385bhp and torque north of 700Nm. A different car.
- Ford Focus ST MK3 (2.0 EcoBoost). 250bhp to around 290-300bhp. Useable gains, throttle wakes right up.
- Mercedes A45 AMG (M133). stock 360bhp to about 410bhp with no hardware changes.
- Audi S3 8V (EA888). 300bhp to around 365-375bhp on Stage 1. Strong, drivable, no compromises.
How the appointment works
You drop the car at our Slough workshop, normally for the day. We do a full health check first, fluids, plugs, intake condition, any stored codes. If the car isn't healthy it doesn't go on the dyno. We don't put maps on tired engines and pretend it's fine. Once it's signed off, baseline dyno run, custom map written for your spec (transmission, fuel, climate, intake mods if any), verification run, then a road test through Langley and back via the M4. Before and after dyno graph goes to you on WhatsApp.
Every map is fully reversible. We keep your original file. Going back to stock for resale or warranty work is a 30 minute job, free of charge for our customers.
What we won't do
We won't remove EGR or DPF on a road-registered UK car. That's illegal under construction and use regulations and an automatic MOT fail. We won't write a map that runs the car outside safe knock margins for cheap power. And we won't tune a car with mechanical problems and let the customer find out at 80mph that it wasn't a tuning issue. Honest engineering. The team at Onyx Autocentre would rather lose the sale than blow up a customer's engine.
