We refurb a lot of BMWs. 3 Series, 4 Series and 5 Series M-Sport 19s come in most weeks, usually with kerbed fronts off the nearside. 1 Series and X1 18s come in with the standard corrosion bubbling round the rim. X3, X5 and X6 20s and 21s are the bigger jobs - heavier wheel, more surface to put right, but the same process.
Most M-Sport wheels from 2015 onwards are diamond-cut - a machined silver face with painted pockets, finished under lacquer. That finish looks sharp when it's new and goes white round the edges the second water gets under the lacquer. We strip them, re-cut the face on the lathe and re-lacquer so they go back on looking like the factory finish, not a painted-over copy.
What we see most on BMWs
Kerbed M-Sport 19s and 20s are the bread and butter. If the kerb's gone deep enough to crack the rim, or you've hit a pothole and the wheel's holding pressure but sitting wrong, that's a crack welding job before we refurb it, not after. We TIG weld, re-profile, then refurb in one go. On the older E90 and E92 painted shadow-line wheels, the usual ask is a full strip and respray in gloss black or anthracite - that's a colour-change powder coat job rather than a like-for-like refurb, and it holds up better than spray paint long-term.
Our process, plain
Wheels off, tyres off, inspected for cracks and buckles. Stripped back, any welding done first, then primed, painted or diamond-cut on the lathe depending on the original finish, lacquered, baked, balanced and refitted. If a tyre's chewed up from the same kerb hit, we'll swap it while it's off - car tyres fitted here so you're not making a second trip.
