The cheap mobile option is a sand-and-spray on your driveway with no oven bake. It looks fine for six months then the paint lifts off the repair patch. Berkshire weather, salt off the M4, and one trip through a jet wash and it is back to square one. A proper job needs heat, prep and the right lacquer. If the kerb hit has cracked the rim rather than just scuffed it, that's an alloy crack welding job first; if you want the whole set re-coloured while you're at it, powder coat colour change is the way.
What a proper kerb repair actually involves
- Tyre removed. you cannot prep or paint a rim properly with the tyre still on it. Mobile guys mask, we strip.
- Damage prepped. sanded back through the lacquer and primer to bare metal, deeper gouges filled and shaped.
- Primer baked. etch primer on bare aluminium, oven cured.
- Colour matched. to your OE shade. We have factory codes for BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW, Ford, Vauxhall, Mini and most others.
- Lacquer baked. two coats, oven cured. The bit mobile repairs skip.
- Tyre refit and balance. valve resealed, TPMS reset, torqued to spec.
How bad is too bad?
Most kerb damage is cosmetic and is straightforward to put right. We do not bin a wheel until we have to. There are two cases where a kerbed wheel becomes more than a paint job. First, if the rim has a flat spot or distortion from a deep hit, we straighten on a hydraulic jig before refinishing. Second, if there is a crack through the rim, it goes to the TIG welder first. Both are handled in-house at our Slough workshop, you do not have to send the wheel anywhere else.
Painted finish vs diamond cut
- Painted wheels. (silver, anthracite, gloss black, satin grey, white) are a straight refinish, single wheel possible.
- Diamond cut wheels. (machined silver face with coloured pocket) need to be put on the lathe. Single wheel works but matching the machined pattern across older wheels can vary. We will show you a sample first.
- Two-tone OE finishes. (BMW M Sport, Audi rotor, Mercedes AMG) we replicate exactly, including the machined edge detailing.
