Corroded Alloys Causing Slow Punctures? Fixed in Slough

If one tyre has been going soft every week or two and the local fast-fit keeps telling you they cannot find a puncture, the leak is almost certainly from a corroded alloy bead, not the tyre itself. It is the single most common cause of mystery slow punctures we see at our Slough workshop, especially on cars that have been through a few winters of M4 and M25 salt. Berkshire roads in January are brutal on aluminium rims and the corrosion sits exactly where the tyre needs to seal.

Pumping the tyre up and spraying tyre sealant in is a workaround, not a fix. The seal needs to be cut back to clean aluminium, sealed properly and the tyre remounted on a clean bead. Done right, it never leaks again. Done wrong, you are back in two months. If the leak turns out to be a hairline crack rather than corrosion, that's an alloy crack welding job - same workshop, same visit. New tyre while it's off? Car tyres fitted here too.

How we know it is a bead leak and not a puncture

  • Submersion test. wheel and tyre off the car, submerged. Bubbles at the rim edge, not from the tyre, confirms bead leak.
  • Visual inspection. we lift the tyre bead and inspect. White or grey oxidation on the inner rim is corrosion.
  • Tread inspection. rules out screws, nails and sidewall damage at the same time so nothing is missed.
  • Valve check. perished rubber valves are a separate leak source. We replace as standard.

How we actually fix it

  • Tyre off. carefully, no bead damage. Mobile tyre fitters often make this worse, not better.
  • Corrosion stripped. back to bare clean aluminium with the right abrasive, not a wire brush which embeds steel particles and accelerates further corrosion.
  • Bead sealed. with the correct bead sealant where the inner rim was pitted.
  • Inner rim coated. to stop the corrosion coming back. The bit fast-fits skip.
  • Outer cosmetic refurb. if the outer face is also corroded or kerbed, we refinish at the same time and you save the labour.
  • New valve, balance, TPMS reset. as standard.

Cars we see this on most often

  • BMW 1, 3 and 5 Series 18in and 19in. M Sport alloys are particularly prone, lacquer fails early on the rim edge.
  • Mini Cooper, Countryman and Clubman. narrow profile tyres, easy to develop rim corrosion.
  • Audi A3, A4 and Q3. diamond cut wheels where the lacquer has lifted.
  • Mercedes A-Class and C-Class. AMG line diamond cut, similar lacquer failure pattern.
  • Range Rover Evoque. 22in, salt and pothole damage common.
  • Ford Focus, Kuga and Mondeo. older sets, simple corrosion fix.
  • Older VW Golf, Polo and Passat. 10 year old wheels, lots of life left if resealed properly.

If you want it done once

A bead reseal is a small job and we can usually do it same day. But if the rim is corroded badly enough to leak, the lacquer has already failed on the outer face too, even if it does not look bad yet. The honest call is to do the full rim refurb at the same time so you are not back in six months. We will give you both options on the quote and let you decide. Plenty of Slough customers do the leaking wheel first and book the other three in once they see the result.

Corroded Alloys Causing Slow Punctures? Fixed in Slough. Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a single bead reseal take?+
Usually same day if you drop it before lunch at our Slough workshop. Full cosmetic refurb on top adds a day or two.
Will the leak come back?+
Not if the corrosion is fully stripped and the bead area is sealed properly. The mistake fast-fits make is sealing over the corrosion, not removing it. We strip then seal.
Can you do it while I wait?+
Bead reseals yes, normally an hour or two. Full refurbs no, they need oven bake time.
Will my TPMS still work?+
Yes. New valves, new seals, system reset before you drive away.
What if the wheel is also kerbed?+
We do both at the same time, you save the labour. Single quote, one drop-off.
Are some wheels just not worth fixing?+
Rare. We can almost always restore a corroded wheel. The cases where we recommend replacement are cracked rims that have been welded multiple times already.
How much is it?+
Bead reseal is a low fixed price per wheel. Full refurb depends on size and finish. Send a photo and reg on WhatsApp for an exact quote.
Easy drop-off from Windsor, Langley or Datchet?+
Yes. SL3 7EW is minutes from all three. Park on site, hand the keys over, wait on site with WiFi and coffee if you prefer.
